    From the Beginning

Several years ago (1996 to be exact), Dr. D.A. Carson, research professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, wrote a book entitled, The Gagging of God: Christianity Confronts Pluralism. It was a masterful analysis of our postmodern world and an exploration of how Christians can speak the grace of God in Christ to a generation that has rejected the Word of God. So many people have no place for the Bible’s truth claims, and when we tell them that God loves them and has a wonderful plan for their lives – well, why not? They are worth loving; in fact, they are entitled to it. And they have some wonderful plans for their lives, too. As far as Jesus being the Savior is concerned, that is all right as well – as long as we don’t deny that there are other equally valid saviors and do not maintain that Jesus has any meaningful claims on their lives.

What Dr. Carson argues is that, in order to be effective disciples for Christ in our here and now, we will have to go back to the Bible and learn to present our case as the Bible itself does. We will need to begin with the doctrine of God as Creator, explaining who he is and what he has done; explain how human beings are created in God’s image and are, therefore, responsible to God for what they do; how we have fallen from that high calling and intent; and how we need someone to rescue us from ruin. We must trace the narrative line of the Bible, through Abraham, Moses, David, and other Old Testament figures right up to the dramatic appearance and work of Jesus.

Bottom line? We must recognize that our world is as spiritually ignorant, biblically illiterate, and pagan as the world into which the gospel of God’s grace, both in its Old Testament and New Testament forms, first came. And we must present our message as the Bible does – from the beginning.

A few more bottom lines: There is no better or needful time for anyone to be studying the Bible’s book of beginnings than the present. By the time we complete our survey of the book of Genesis, we will have examined all fifty chapters through the lens of each of these big picture objectives:

    1. Where is the gospel in this text? Where do we see God’s redemptive purpose here?
    2. How does this text fit into the bigger narrative of Scripture which culminates in Jesus?
    3. What orthodox doctrine, what orthodox theology is taught or reinforced in this text?

And, if you think the pace of our exploration will be only somewhat slower than the speed at which sound travels through salt water, you are absolutely spot on correct…but Adult Christian Education at Graham subscribes to a ‘no theologian left behind’ philosophy; as in, your confidence in being able to “correctly handle the word of truth” (2 Ti 2:15) will be strengthened each week. Oh, this is going to be so good!
